Common faults we fix

What's gone wrong with your ice machine?

Five symptoms we see on Sydney cafés, bars and restaurants every week — with what they usually mean and what the callout involves.

Not making ice at all

The bin's empty and nothing's dropping. Usually a water-supply or inlet-valve fault, a stuck harvest/defrost cycle, a control-board or float issue, or a low refrigerant charge from a slow leak. We work the water side and the refrigeration side methodically rather than condemning the board on a guess.

Low output or soft, hollow ice

It's running but you're rationing ice by mid-shift, or cubes come out cloudy and melting fast. Often a dirty condenser running the head pressure up, scale on the evaporator, a worn water pump, or a charge that's drifted. We gauge it up and clean it back to its rated output.

Leaking or pooling water

Water under the machine is a slip hazard and a sign something's blocked or split. Typically a clogged drain line, a cracked or overflowing reservoir, a perished inlet hose, or a tired water valve that won't seat. We trace the leak and fix the source, not just dry the floor.

Scale, slime or off-tasting ice

Hard-water scale chokes ice production and a pink or grey biofilm in the bin is a food-safety problem you can taste. We descale the water path and clean and sanitise the machine to manufacturer spec, so output recovers and the ice is safe to serve.

Noisy, rattling or short-cycling

A new grinding, a loud hum or the unit clicking on and off is wear before it's a failure. Commonly a worn fan-motor bearing, a failing pump, a blocked condenser tripping the high-pressure cut-out, or a control fault. We catch it early so a small part doesn't take the whole machine down on a busy night.

Cleaning & descaling

A clean ice machine is a food-safety asset

Ice is a food, and an ice machine is the one piece of kit in the venue that's warm, wet and dark inside. Left alone, it grows scale, slime and mould — which slows production and ends up in the glass.

A scheduled descale and sanitise keeps output at its rated level, protects the compressor from running hot on a scaled-up coil, and keeps your ice safe to serve under the Food Standards Code. We descale the water path, strip and sanitise the bin and food-contact parts, replace the water filter, and leave a service record for your food-safety folder.

  • Descale the water path & evaporator
  • Sanitise the bin & food-contact parts
  • Replace the inline water filter
  • Clean the condenser & check output

Want it handled on a schedule across your sites? Roll it into scheduled refrigeration maintenance and never think about it again.

FAQ

Ice machine repair questions

Why is my ice machine not making ice?
The common causes are a water-supply or inlet-valve fault, a stuck harvest or defrost cycle, heavy scale on the evaporator, a dirty condenser raising the head pressure, or a low refrigerant charge from a slow leak. We check the water side and the refrigeration side on-site to find the actual cause rather than guessing — and quote before any work starts.
How often should an ice machine be cleaned and sanitised?
As a rule of thumb, descale and sanitise a commercial ice machine at least every six months — more often in hard-water areas or high-output venues. Because ice is a food, regular cleaning isn't just about output: it keeps the machine compliant with the Food Standards Code. We can put it on a schedule across your sites and leave a record each visit.
What's the difference between a flaker and a cuber?
A cuber makes hard, slow-melting cube or half-cube ice — ideal for drinks and bars. A flaker makes soft, mouldable flake or nugget ice that's better for food display, seafood, healthcare and blended drinks. They use different harvest mechanisms, so the faults differ. We repair and service both, and can advise which suits your trade.
Is it worth repairing an ice machine, or should I replace it?
Usually it's worth repairing. Most faults — a water valve, pump, fan motor, control board, scaling or a gas leak — cost far less to fix than a new machine. We diagnose first and give you an upfront quote, so you can make a clear repair-or-replace decision rather than being pushed into one.
Which ice machine brands do you repair?
All major commercial makes — Hoshizaki, Scotsman, Manitowoc Ice, Ice-O-Matic, Stuart and more — plus generic modular and self-contained units. We fit genuine spare parts where available. See the full list of brands we service.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. We hold an ARC Refrigerant Handling Licence (L057415), an NSW contractor licence (330089C), and we're an ASSA member, fully insured and an Australian business since 2013 (ABN 90 166 129 102).
